Since the original Lightbox script, there have been countless clones generated for all the popular Javascript libraries. There are many solutions similar to Lightbox that can be used to display modal windows, overlays, image galleries, videos and other media content. Because the “lightbox” effect is so popular and looks cool and stylish, we decided to gather here some great lightbox scripts which you can use to add this functionality to your websites. These scripts and plugins are best used on visually-focused website types, such as portfolios, photography, and other creative designs.

In case you are not familiar with MooTools, you should know that it is a collection of JavaScript utilities designed for the intermediate to advanced JavaScript developer. This lightweight, object-oriented JavaScript framework is released under the free, open-source MIT License.

Thickbox for mootools

Smoothbox is the Mootools conversion of Thickbox, built with a jQuery library of 20kb when compressed. It can resize the images, hide form elements and remain centered.

ColorBox lightbox

This is a  light-weight, customizable lightbox plugin for jQuery that comes in five different styles. It supports photos, grouping, slideshow, ajax, inline, and iframed content, its appearance is controlled through CSS and can be extended with callbacks & event-hooks.

Zoomer is easy to use and helpful if you need to see a zoomed image inside the original one. It is easy to add this simple and nice image zoom class, just check out the instructions on how to use it. This was created by Anton Samoylov.


Floatbox demonstration and examples

It has some great, useful features, such as the images can be dragged around, supports opening multiple images at the same time, visitors can still access the underlying content of the page and find the navigation buttons.

    I recently did a good test of most of the moolightboxes. A lot are old (1.1) or bloated.
    After some serious thought i chose slimbox. If you want a simple image lightbox this is the one for you. updated to 2.1+
    Works like a charm!

    Guess you are missing -> lightbox with support for flv,swf,images,audio,html,inline content and PDF’s – based on mootools 1.2.x

    fyi I’ve deployed many of these in various projects – Slimbox, Smoothbox, Squeezebox and Milkbox. I used to prefer Squeezebox however have encountered issues using on image heavy sites on safari3+ (also flash video issues). Slimbox would be first choice for images.
